In a story ripped straight from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Disney has announced that it is closing Toontown Online, the long-running children’s MMO, along with two other virtual worlds. They’ll go offline in September.
Toontown Online has been running for 10 years now. It’ll officially shutter on September 19, along with Pirates of the Caribbean Online and Disney Fairies Pixie Hollow Online. Disney is encouraging users to visit their only surviving virtual world in the kids market, Club Penguin.
- Toontown Online chose to create a CD that could be purchased in stores due to customer insecurity when downloading and buying things online that they could not physically hold. “We are shifting our development focus toward other online and mobile play experiences, such as Club Penguin and a growing selection of Disney Mobile apps,” the company said in a statement.
Toontown Online Shut Down
On August 20, 2013, Disney announced that Disney's Toontown Online was scheduled to close on September 19, 2013, at 11:59 AM Pacific time. The game was still online for almost 30 minutes afterward, but all servers were reset somewhere around 12:30 PM Pacific time. Since that time, the game's launcher has not been able to connect any users to the game. According to the Closing FAQ, Disney's. Collapse in imminent, but that's not enough for EPCP, they want to kick them while their down to prevent any sort of reform. The details of their plan are not yet known. What is known, however, is that if they're successful, Toontown Online (and Pirates of the Carribean Online, according to rumor) will be destroyed in roughly a month.
The news comes at the same time as the launch of Disney Infinity, Disney’s answer to the insanely lucrative Skylanders.
